The moment it became known that the Senate was planning to grant special tax benefits to the gambling houses and casinos, many social conservatives became agitated and have begun to voice their objection.
They are not against the $7 billion of tax benefits announced for all those companies that decide to invest in the areas hit by Hurricane Katrina, but they do not understand why these benefits will be given to houses of gambling. Casinos, massage parlors, liquor stores and golf courses will now be included as well.
But those opposing this amendment will have to come up with a unique way to block these companies, because the tax benefits were announced without singling out industries. Thus to block it one needs to find a way to do it without naming the gambling industry.
These opponents are arguing that casinos anyway make a lot of money off people and so it is not only unnecessary to give them the benefit of tax cuts, but it is an industry that the state can make money to use to help build up the area. But those in favour state that everyone should be treated fairly and that even casinos will need to rebuild the establishments and thus should get these benefits because they will raise the work force of the affected areas.
